Further Podium for Jack Aitken in Formula Renault 2.0 NEC at Spa

It was a weekend of mixed fortunes for 17-year-old Jack Aitken at the iconic circuit of Spa-Francorchamps for the fourth round of the Formula Renault 2.0 NEC with Fortec Motorsports.Contesting his first season of European racing and only his second in single seaters, Jack made a strong start to the weekend. The first free practice session in Belgium on Thursday saw typical local wet weather and was declared a wash out, however Jack was able to get to grips with his FR2.0/13 by Tatuus car in FP2 in the drier afternoon to set the fastest lap on the timesheet.London based Jack showed his ever improving race craft to dominate his qualifying Group B on Friday morning, enduring ever worsening wet weather conditions to claim pole position (qualifying is split into two groups) and 2nd position overall for the start of Race One later in the afternoon.Jack made a good start off the grid and led the opening laps of the race from pole sitter Oscar Tunjo after a successful side-by-side overtake at Eau Rouge. With Fortec team mate Matt Parry close behind in third, the trio outclassed the rest of the field and pulled away to set up a good battle for victory. Unfortunately, Tunjo was able to retake position from Jack who defended well, but was also eventually overtaken by championship leader Parry on the final lap to finish in third position, but another podium, at the chequered flag.It was cold and damp on Saturday morning making for tricky track conditions for Race Two. From the front row of the grid once again Jack made a great start on his slick Michelin tyres, maintaining second position as he manoeuvred through Eau Rouge. On the Kemmel Straight Jack got a tow off race leader Tunjo, allowing him to pass up the inside. However, as he edged out in front, contact between his rear and Tunjos front caused the pair to spin off track, resulting in a puncture for Jack and a retirement for Tunjo. The Fortec team managed to get Jack back out on track in P20, but with only four minutes remaining there was little he could do to improve on his position to the end of the race.Jack Aitken comments, In some respects it was quite a good weekend and it was my first race at Spa. My starts are a lot better and I have learned a lot of things, especially driving in the tricky conditions, but it is not good to lose so many points as a result of an accident. I am disappointed, but shall put it down to experience and prepare for the races next weekend.
