Record-breaking nineteenth Formula Ford win for Dan Cammish

Another record falls to JTR and Cammish as his title bid nears a successful conclusionNico Maranzana a close second in a thrilling race, claiming Scholarship Cup victoryDan Cammish triumphed for the 19th time in the Dunlop MSA Formula Ford Championship this afternoon at Knockhill, the JTR Mygale driver holding his nerve through an extended safety car period and making a lightning getaway at the restart to outfox the pursuing Jamun car of Nico Maranzana.

Maranzana, who qualified second on the grid alongside pole man Cammish, had been right on the championship leader’s tail on the opening lap and looked poised to make a challenge for the lead. Alas for the Argentinian, his opportunity was robbed from him by the appearance on track of the safety car while debris was cleared up.

The safety car was on track for five laps, and at the restart Dan used all his experience to make a clean break from Nico. By the lap’s end he was a second clear and he extended his advantage to 2.4s by the chequered flag to claim win 19 and the modern-era record for the most wins in a single Formula Ford season.

“It was my first time with the safety car,” said a rueful Maranzana, “and it was then that he won the race. He played a little trick on me and made a perfect restart. Now I have that trick in my mind. Dan has a lot of experience and I can learn from him.” Maranzana’s second place also secured him the Scholarship class win.

“I think that race was won under the safety car,” added Cammish. “Nico had to find out the hard way that you have to pay attention.”

The incident which brought out the safety car was a turn one clash between the cars of Camren Kaminsky (JTR) and Andy Richardson (Richardson Racing) which resulted in both men exiting the race. There was plenty of drama to follow after the safety car, too, with Jayde Kruger spinning out of a hard-won third place at the restart and his pursuers doing well to avoid piling into him.

Harrison Scott regained third as a result of Kruger’s problems and held on to it all the way to the final lap, when overheating problems started to tell on the pace of his Falcon Motorsport Mygale. Sam Brabham (JTR) was quick to seize his chance, diving down Scott’s inside into Leslie’s to secure the final podium place. “He got a bit sideways and I thought, right I’d better go for it. I jinked one way and then the other, got alongside and nearly lost it on the exit of the corner, but managed to pull it off,” said Sam.

Scott just managed - by two-hundredths of a second - to cling on to fourth ahead of Juan Rosso (Jamun), with Kruger recovering from dead last to overhaul James Abbott’s Radical Mygale for sixth five laps from the end.

Maranzana will have a chance for revenge in Round 20 tomorrow morning when he will start from pole position - his first in Formula Ford - with Cammish alongside. It’s only the second time this season that Cammish has been denied a pole start.
