KING’S Lynn No.1 Niels-Kristian Iversen confirmed his place in the 2014 Grand Prix series with victory in Saturday’s GP Challenge at Poole.Iversen was joined in the top three by another current GP rider, Krzysztof Kasprzak, whilst Kenneth Bjerre will make a return to the competition next year.Iversen’s current position comfortably in the top eight of the full series should mean good news for Birmingham’s Martin Smolinski, who finished fourth on Saturday, edging out Chris Harris on count-back – with the British rider likely to be promoted to the first reserve position.Iversen said: “I got what I came for and that was to win the meeting and book my place. It was a good meeting for me and I’m happy to have won it. I can ride the rest of the Grand Prix series without too much pressure on myself and just enjoy the meetings.”

WORKINGTON took another step towards the Premier League play-offs last night with a convincing 53-39 victory over Newcastle at Derwent Park. The result moved the Comets up to third in the current league table, with Rene Bach top-scoring on 14 points whilst Anton Rosen made an impressive Diamonds debut with 10+2.Workington boss Tony Jackson said: “We asked the lads for a really big effort against the Diamonds and they responded magnificently to a man. They all knew the significance of the meeting and how tight things are getting at the top of the table, and I cannot fault their commitment whatsoever. “With Tero Aarnio back in the side following his appearance in the Finnish Championship on Saturday we will be going to Newcastle (on Sunday) with seven riders and the aim is to build on our home success and try to get something from the return match, as every point gained is crucial in our quest to secure a play-off position.”(SPEEDWAY 3)

STOKE finally secured their first National League win of the season by overcoming the Isle of Wight 53-37 at Loomer Road.Luke Priest and Lee Payne headed a solid Potters display with 10+1 whilst the result was a blow to the Islanders’ play-off hopes, with visiting top two of Adam Ellis and guest Steve Boxall unable to complete the meeting after crashes.Stoke boss Malcolm Vasey said: “I’m very pleased to get a win under our belts. The whole team tackled the meeting with a lot of heart and determination and I am really pleased with the whole performance. “I’d like to give a special mention to our reserves who both scored heavily also, now we travel to Mildenhall on Sunday afternoon and for the first time in a long while we name an unchanged side.”(FIXTURES)
