Fuller and Jaffer Both Climb Points Standings At Brands
Two largely uneventful Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship races resulted in a mixed bag of results for Hillspeed's trio of drivers at Brands Hatch Indy Circuit over the weekend, 14th/15th May, although Howard Fuller and Zaamin Jaffer both managed to make progress up the points standings. With a highly competitive fifth place finish in round three on Sunday, backed-up with a top eight result in round four, 18-year-old Fuller shot up the championship order into seventh position. In qualifying on Saturday, the Kingston-upon-Thames driver showed an exceptional turn of speed with the fourth fastest time - just 0.021 seconds shy of a maiden pole position. Unfortunately slipping to fifth off the start, that's where he remained for the duration of the 20-minute encounter finishing just 0.6 seconds shy of the top four - hinting at the distinct lack of overtaking opportunities at the 1.2-mile track.Starting round four from seventh position, Fuller again lost places off the start but did move back into eighth and underlined his pace once more with a fastest lap time a single 10th of a second away from the fastest of all.Jaffer continued to show strong pace in only his second 'slicks and wings' race meeting, the Indian 21-year-old rising into the championship top 10 off the back of seventh and ninth place results in the weekend's two races. Qualifying eighth for round three, he made a good start to gain a position straight away but like team-mate Fuller remained there to the chequered flag despite pushing hard to try and carve out some passing opportunities. Starting round four from 12th place, Jaffer made an impressively strong getaway again to climb two positions into the top 10 and then gained a further spot around mid-distance when Kieran Vernon crashed out from fourth place due to a sticking throttle.Rookie Sean Walkinshaw wasn't able to optimise his practice time during general testing on Friday, 13th May, when a damaged radiator in session one was then followed by a problem with his clutch in the third session. Working hard to fix the latter to get the 17-year-old back on track, it transpired the new part supplied had incorrect fixings which cost team and driver a lot of crucial time.Even so, the Chipping Norton racer went on to post his most competitive qualifying effort of the season so far during the round four session with the 18th quickest time out of 22 competitors, only 0.9 seconds shy of pole, and in the race he finished in 20th place. The earlier third round ended with a highly unfortunate non-finish when he had to take avoiding action due to an incident ahead."It was a tough weekend really", said team principal Richard Ollerenshaw, "The action at Brands Indy is never anything other than processional in the main, it's more a qualifying competition as there just aren't enough realistic overtaking opportunities in a BARC Formula Renault which doesn't show the championship off in its best light."Howard showed exceptional speed in qualifying and was very close to being on the front row of the grid for the first race - had he managed that he could easily have been on the podium. Zaamin did a good job all weekend too, he started and raced very well and just needs a bit more time at the Indy track to find those final few 10ths of a second."He added: "Sean holed a radiator on Friday in the first practice session and then his clutch was damaged in session three so he lost a lot of vital track time. In race one he had to avoid an accident ahead and that resulted in his retirement but we were pleased with his pace in qualifying, especially the second session. To be within 0.9 seconds of pole position was a very promising effort."Next on the calendar for Hillspeed will be rounds five and six of the Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship two weeks from now, Saturday, 28th May, at Oulton Park in Cheshire.2011 Provisional Protyre Formula Renault BARC Championship Standings (after Rd4):7th Howard Fuller, 54pts; 10th Zaamin Jaffer, 51pts; 22nd Sean Walkinshaw, 5pts
